One month after Donald Trump took his oath of office, Rep. Justin Amash (R–Mich.) pinned at the top of his very active Twitter feed George Washington's famous farewell address warning against "the baneful effects of the spirit of party generally."
This morning, not seven weeks after breaking ranks with this party in calling for impeachment proceedings against the president, Amash announced in a Washington Post op-ed that he's leaving the GOP and declaring himself an independent.
"Today, I am declaring my independence and leaving the Republican Party," the five-term congressman wrote. "No matter your circumstance, I'm asking you to join me in rejecting the partisan loyalties and rhetoric that divide and dehumanize us….The two-party system has evolved into an existential threat to American principles and institutions."
Amash, 39, had become increasingly isolated within the congressional GOP long beforespelling out in a Twitter thread his conclusion that Trump "has engaged in impeachable conduct." He crossed swords with the administration on the travel banObamacare repeal/replace, the firing of then–FBI director James Comey, various spending increasestariffs, the president's relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, birthright citizenshipSaudi Arabiaeminent domain, and the emergency declaration along the border, for starters...

Yeah, he will be back just like Ron Paul, Bob Barr, and William Weld.

If he's looking for the Libertarian presidential nomination in 2020 I hope they remember that he had a chance to switch to them and give them their very first Member of Congress but chose to pass. I think he has just shot himself in the foot big time!

He did not leave the Republican Party, the Republican Party left him, on their way out of the building...
The Republican party is nothing but a spendaholic, menagerie of criminal republicrats. There is absolutely no way and honest man like Justin would ever go back to that party. He thought he had comrades in the freedom caucus, they turned out to be a bunch of Benedict Arnolds.

There may be more to Amash's recent behavior a la Trump, impeachment et al. Check out the links that Don Wills provided over at BAN. Very eye opening! (BAN seems to be down as I write this but Richard Winger says his webmaster is working to get it back up.)

Full disclosure on above comment: if you are predisposed to really like Rep. Amash then DO NOT read the links in Don Wills Ballot Access News comments regarding Amash' switch to independent status. He may not be the Mr. Clean everyone hope he is.

I'd wonder about those accusations against Amash.

Plus the evidence of perjury on where his family's tools get manufactured is very much open to question.

But its more then obvious that the minions (like Don Willis) of our God Emperor and the twin-party system seem to be afraid of an Amash presidential candidacy if they're attacking him this vigorously, especially to the point of creating fake websites, like they did before.

Still, to me, it shows that Amash is indeed a Libertarian in his business sense and one that doesn't bow to the false savior of economic protectionism.

Cody- I know you don't like Don Wills much but I don't see how you can accuse him of being a supporter of the two party duopoly. I don't remember him ever being a Trump supporter, either. I am predisposed to like Rep. Amash but all this stuff makes one wonder.
